Cap Size & Fit Guide for Custom Orders

A useful cap specification connects the wearer’s head measurement with a physical reference cap, clear measurement points and a sample fit check. Use this guide to prepare a custom order; it is a measurement method, not a NanCrown stock size chart.

Mark the measurement before giving the number

Schematic reference, not a size chart. Agree on endpoints, tape path and cap condition using a marked photo of your reference cap. No universal size or tolerance is implied.

A · Head circumference

Keep the tape level around the intended wearing line, above the ears. Record the unit; do not pull it tight.

B · Inside circumference

Follow the inside sweatband at the agreed closure setting, without stretching. A head measurement and a cap measurement are not interchangeable.

C · Crown depth and brim length

Mark the crown-depth endpoints and whether you measure along the surface. For the brim, agree on the centre line from the crown seam to the edge and its curved or flat state.

Begin with the wearer and one reference cap

Head circumference measures the wearer. Inside circumference measures the cap along its wearing line. They are different measurements: do not copy one into the other without a physical fit check. A flat width multiplied by two is not a reliable substitute for the inside circumference of a shaped cap.

1

Measure the head

Use a flexible tape around the intended wearing line, above the eyebrows and ears and around the back of the head. Keep it level and snug without compressing. Record the unit, hair condition and any headwear worn underneath.

2

Choose one reference

Identify a cap that fits the intended wearer. Give it a reference name and photograph the front, side, back, inside and closure setting. Use this same cap for all measurements.

3

Record the cap state

Measure the dry cap without stretching it. Record whether it is relaxed or supported, the closure position, and whether it has been washed. Agree on any different test condition before comparing results.

4

Check the sample on a wearer

Try the physical sample at the recorded setting. Check pressure, slipping, ear clearance and crown position. Keep measurement results and comfort feedback together.

Agree on the measurement points

MeasurementHow to define it
Inside circumferenceFollow the inner sweatband at the agreed wearing line with a flexible tape, without pulling. Record the exact closure setting. For stretch constructions, agree separately how any stretched measurement is taken.
Crown depth / heightMark the start and end points on a photo. For example, agree whether the front measurement follows the outer crown from the lower sweatband edge to the top seam. A surface measurement and a vertical height are different: state which you use.
Brim centre lengthMark the centre line from the crown-to-brim seam to the brim tip. Agree whether the tape follows the curve or a straight distance is measured; record the brim’s flat or curved state.
Adjustment rangeRecord the shortest and longest intended usable closure positions on the same cap, with photos. Check the fit at those positions; the hardware’s travel alone is not a verified wearer size range.

Record centimetres (cm) or millimetres (mm) beside every value. Use the same method when comparing the reference and the sample.

Choose the shape and closure together

ChoiceWhat to confirm
Structured / unstructured crownA supported front holds its shape differently from a soft front. Share front and side views, desired softness and a physical reference rather than only saying “low profile”.
Adjustable / fitted / stretchSpecify the closure type and setting, or the individual fitted sizes. For stretch fabric or sweatbands, agree on relaxed measurement and any stretch test method. Adjustable does not mean it fits every wearer.
Adult / children’s fitRecord actual target head measurements and sample fit feedback for the intended wearers. Do not choose dimensions from age labels alone or simply scale an adult cap. Confirm crown, brim and closure separately.

Crown shape, fabric, sweatband and closure work together. A size name alone does not define the finished fit.

Approve the fit on the physical sample

  • Compare the reference cap and sample using the same marked points, unit, state and closure setting. Photograph the tape position so another person can repeat the check.
  • Review the crown position, forehead pressure, ear clearance, slipping and closure comfort on the intended wearer. A matching circumference alone does not confirm the fit.
  • Record requested changes by measurement and photo reference. Keep the approved sample ID and final specification together; check any revised sample again before approval.

Cap size and fit questions

Is head circumference the same as cap size?+

Head circumference describes the wearer; cap inside circumference describes a product in a stated condition. Fit also depends on shape, fabric, sweatband and closure. Confirm the relationship on a physical sample.

Can I order a universal adult or children’s size?+

Do not assume a universal fit from those labels. Share target head measurements, the intended wearers and a reference cap, then confirm the sample and usable closure settings.

Can you match a cap I already like?+

Send the reference cap details, photos, measurements and the features you want to keep or change. Feasibility and the final specification need confirmation through sampling; a photograph alone cannot establish exact fit.

What tolerance should I put in the specification?+

Agree on a tolerance for each measurement together with its measuring method and cap condition. This guide does not publish a standard tolerance or a tested size range.
